LEGAL GUIDE / 04
Family visas, interviews and refusals explained.
Guides for US family immigration from Bangladesh: F4 sibling visas, IR1/CR1 spouse visas, F2A, 221(g) refusals, administrative processing and reapplying.
THE ESSENTIALS
Most US immigrant visas for Bangladeshi families are family-based. IR1 and CR1 visas are for spouses of US citizens; F2A is for spouses and children of permanent residents; and F4 is for brothers and sisters of adult US citizens. Interviews are held at the US Embassy in Dhaka.
Preference categories such as F2A and F4 depend on priority dates published in the US Department of State’s monthly Visa Bulletin. A 221(g) refusal means the consular officer needs further information or administrative processing before deciding the case.

COMMON QUESTIONS
F4 is the family preference category for brothers and sisters of US citizens who are at least 21 years old. Visa availability depends on the priority date shown in the Visa Bulletin.
Both are for spouses of US citizens. CR1 applies when the marriage is less than two years old when the spouse is admitted to the US and leads to conditional residence; IR1 applies when the marriage is two years old or more.
A 221(g) refusal means the consular officer needs further documents or administrative processing before deciding the case. Follow the instructions on the letter you received.
It depends on the category, the priority date, the Visa Bulletin and the individual case. Immediate relative categories such as IR1 and CR1 are not subject to the annual preference limits.
