Copyright Registration in Bangladesh
Copyright protects the works like Books, Dramas, Paintings etc. Generally the author of a Copyright has the right to reproduce, publish, perform, communicate, adopt, license his work for a certain years. The copyright enables its owner to control the commercial exploitation of his work. The matters related to copyright is mainly governed by the Copyright Act 2000 in Bangladesh.
What is protected?
Copyright protects the expression of ideas (eg words and illustration) of its owner but not the idea itself. The following works are protected by Copyright law of Bangladesh:
- Literary work
- Dramatic work
- Musical work
- Artistic work
- Cinema
- Record
- Website
- Software
- Architectural work
- Mobile Apps etc.
Registration
Copyright in Bangladesh is registered in the Copyright Office. In order to register the following documents are required to be submitted with the application:
- A filled up application form with attested photographs
- Copies of work
- Treasury Challan to show the registration fee being paid
- A declaration that no suit pending in the court and the information provided in the application is correct
- Attested photocopy of NID/Passport to proof the nationality (for Bangladeshi nationals).
After submitting the registration application, the registrar of the Copyright Office will wait 30 days for any objection to be received.
Infringement of copyright can be both remedied and punished in Civil and Criminal Court in Bangladesh.
